Technologies are techs found in the 'Research' tab that, once discovered, gives access to new items to use/exploit. A 'Research Lab' is needed to be able to research them. They also give you a GP bonus as well. During the tutorial you're required to research the technology "Basic Geology", which gives access to tier 1 mineable resources and the 'Geologist'.
